About Dry Eye

Dry eye is the condition where insufficient tears are produced to lubricate the eye.

Tears are required for a healthy eye, lubricating the front surface both comforts and aids clear vision.

Dry eyes are caused when you don’t produce enough tears or poor tears quality.

Dry eye is a common problem and while often experienced by older adults younger people particularly those who use computers or screens a lot often suffer with it as well.

Dry Eye Symptoms

  • Fatigue
  • Redness
  • Contact lens wearers often have difficulty wearing contact lenses
  • Watery eyes
    • Yes watery eyes are the body's response to irritation the eyes
  • Stinging, burning, or scratchy sensation
  • Light sensitivity

  • Blurred vision
    • Often worsening at the end of the day
    • Worse after a prolonged period of screen time

Preventing Dry Eye

There is a range of ways to help reduce or prevent dry eyes, avoiding or modify situations to help prevent or reduce dry eyes for example:
  • Don’t blow air in your eyes. Direct sources such as car vents, fans, hairdryers, air conditioners away from your eyes.
  • Wear sunglasses or other protective eye wear. This helps to stop the wind drying your eye out.
  • Using a computer or screen lots, even reading books for long periods, take eye breaks or blink regularly. When we concentrate on those sorts of tasks we tend to blink less often, so remember to take breaks or make an effort to blink more often.  If you are a big computer user and are having dry eye problems you can even get some software to help.  Check out eye blink from Blink Matters Click Here, for some technical assistance that not only reminds you to blink, with a good web camera it can tell you how often you are blink as well. There is a free version so it costs nothing to give it a go.
  • Of course, Stop smoking and avoid smoke. I am sure we don’t need to tell you this however if you smoke try to give up as smoke can worsen dry eyes symptoms.
  • Artificial tears are a great aid. If you have chronic dry eyes, then the use eye drops even when your eyes feel fine will help to keep them well-lubricated and feeling fine.
