We allow time for a careful eye exam, clear explanations, and modern eye health checks.
When you book a complete eye exam with Waipapa Eyecare, we do not rush you in and out. We schedule 45 minutes with the optometrist so there is time to check your vision, assess your eye health, and explain our findings.
Our complete eye exams include OCT scanning and retinal photography as standard, helping us look at more than just your glasses prescription.

More than reading letters on a chart
A complete eye exam is not just a quick prescription check. We look at your vision, comfort, eye health, and any concerns that may affect your eyes now or in the future.

OCT is included in our complete eye exam
Optical Coherence Tomography, or OCT, gives us a detailed 3D scan of the retina. This helps us assess the health of the back of your eyes and compare changes over time.
OCT can help detect or monitor a range of eye health concerns, sometimes before you notice symptoms or changes in your vision.
Key parts of the exam
The exact tests may vary depending on your age, symptoms, history, and what the optometrist finds, but these are common parts of a complete exam.
OCT 3D retinal scan
OCT produces detailed cross-section and 3D images of the retina. This can assist with detecting, assessing, and monitoring eye health changes.
Retinal photography
Retinal photos provide images of the inside of your eye and create a useful baseline for future comparison.
Eye pressure
Measuring eye pressure is one part of checking glaucoma risk. It is quick and usually done with a small puff of air.
Visual field screening
Visual field testing helps check for areas of reduced side vision. This may be relevant for glaucoma and some neurological concerns.
Eye muscle coordination
We check how your eyes work together, which can be relevant for double vision, headaches, eyestrain, and some reading difficulties.
Slit lamp microscope exam
The slit lamp lets us examine the front of your eyes in detail, including the cornea, eyelids, tear film, lens, and signs of dry eye or cataract.
Our first priority is your eye health
Glasses are important, but a thorough exam should also look for signs of eye disease, explain what is happening, and help decide whether treatment, monitoring, or referral is needed.

How long does an eye exam take?
We usually schedule 45 minutes with the optometrist for a complete eye exam. Some appointments may be shorter or longer depending on your needs.
Is OCT extra?
OCT and retinal photos are included as standard with our complete eye exams at Waipapa Eyecare.
Will I need drops?
Not always. Drops may be recommended depending on your symptoms, eye health, prescription, and what the optometrist needs to assess.
Should I bring my current glasses?
Yes. Please bring your current glasses, sunglasses, contact lenses, medication list, and any previous eye health information if you have it.
Urgent eye symptoms
Please phone us rather than booking online if you have sudden vision loss, eye pain, a new shadow or curtain in your vision, sudden flashes, a sudden increase in floaters, or an eye injury.
These symptoms may need urgent advice or referral.
