Eye Exams for Kids
Children need clear, comfortable vision to help them learn, play, read, and take part in everyday life.
Children do not always know when their vision is blurry. They may think everyone sees the same way they do, or they may adapt by sitting closer, avoiding reading, squinting, or relying on one eye more than the other.
At Waipapa Eyecare, we provide children’s eye exams to check vision, eye coordination, eye health, and whether glasses or further care may be helpful.
Signs your child may need an eye exam
- Squinting or closing one eye
- Sitting very close to screens or books
- Difficulty seeing the board at school
- Headaches or tired eyes
- Losing place while reading
- Avoiding reading or close work
- One eye turning in or out
- Failed B4 School vision screening
Kids’ Eye Exams
Eye exams for children are available at Waipapa Eyecare.
Subsidies may be available for eligible children. Please ask us if you are unsure what your child may qualify for.
Why children’s vision matters
Good vision can make a real difference to school, sport, reading, screen use, confidence, and comfort.
Learning and reading
Children use their eyes constantly at school. Blurry vision, focusing problems, or eye coordination issues can make learning harder.
Sport and confidence
Clear, comfortable vision can help with sport, outdoor activities, coordination, and confidence in everyday situations.
Eye health
An eye exam checks more than vision. It can also help identify eye health issues or concerns that may need monitoring or referral.
Failed a B4 School vision check?
If your child has failed a B4 School screening check, we can provide a more detailed eye exam and explain what the results mean.
What we check
The exact tests depend on your child’s age, symptoms, and ability to respond, but a children’s eye exam may include these checks.
Distance and near vision
We check how clearly your child sees at distance and near, using age-appropriate tests where needed.
Prescription
We check for common focusing conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.
Eye coordination
We look at how well the eyes work together, including focusing, tracking, and eye alignment.
Eye health
We assess eye health and check for signs that may need monitoring, treatment, or referral.
Glasses advice
If glasses are recommended, we explain why, when they should be worn, and what lens or frame options may be suitable.
Clear explanation
We explain the results in plain language so parents and caregivers understand what is happening and what the next steps are.
Children’s spectacle subsidy
Some children may be eligible for a spectacle subsidy toward eye care and glasses. The current amount shown on our page is $287.50.
This may apply for eligible children with a parent, guardian, or child who has a valid Community Services Card, or for a child with a current High Use Health Card.
Eligibility and subsidy details can change, so please ask us and we can help check what may apply.
Common children’s vision problems
Children can have the same focusing problems as adults, but they may not always describe them clearly.
Myopia
Myopia, or nearsightedness, makes distance vision blurry. Children may struggle to see the board or distant signs.
Hyperopia
Hyperopia, or farsightedness, can sometimes cause eye strain, headaches, blurred vision, or focusing effort.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism can blur or distort vision at distance and near, depending on the amount and the child’s visual needs.
What age should children have an eye exam?
Children can have an eye exam at any age if there are concerns. It is especially worth booking if they fail a screening check, have symptoms, have a family history of eye issues, or are struggling at school.
Does my child need to know letters?
Not always. We can use different tests depending on your child’s age and confidence, including picture or matching tests where appropriate.
Should I bring anything?
Please bring any current glasses, previous prescriptions, reports from school or screening checks, and a list of any relevant health or development information.
What if glasses are needed?
We will explain what the prescription means, whether glasses are recommended, when they should be worn, and what frame and lens options may be suitable.
